Salco Products recently celebrated a major safety milestone when its Houston, Texas location surpassed five years without a recordable safety incident.
"Five years of injury-free performance is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of the skill and dedication of our Houston team," said DOUG SPIRE, Stucki's vice president of global environmental, health and safety.
Salco, a manufacturer of plastic and metal products used in rail cars, repairs and reconditions hopper car outlet gates at the Houston location. "Our safety record is the result of a real team effort," said BARRY NGUYEN, operations manager. "We have about 20 employees at the Houston shop, and they do a great job of identifying possible hazards and really watching out for each other." Barry credited NICK LAKATOS, director of operations at Salco, for establishing a "safety first" mentality in Houston. "Nick preceded me in this job and has been the one constant throughout the last five years," he said.
Employees begin each shift with a production meeting that covers at least one safety-related topic. “We also cover safety at our monthly training sessions,” said Barry. "It’s a constant area of emphasis,” he continued. “We make it a point to listen to any concerns brought up by our team members and address them quickly."
Doug said safety is the number one priority for plant operations and that Stucki's emphasis on continuous improvement has created a culture of safety throughout the company. "Safety and continuous improvement go hand in hand," he said. "The improvements being made are contributing to our outstanding safety record, at Salco and all our locations."
